The Ethiopian People"s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) - as a coalition of rebel forces - tilted finally the regime in 1991.

Travel 1999 Congo

Travel Africa

Upon independence in 1960, the former French region of Middle Congo became the Republic of the Congo. Marxism was abandoned in 1990 and a democratically elected government took office in 1992.

A brief civil war in 1997 restored former Marxist President Denis SASSOU-NGUESSO, but ushered in a period of ethnic and political unrest.

A quarter century of experimentation with Southern-based rebel groups agreed to a final peace accord in March 2003,but the calm is tenuous and refugees continue to present a humanitarian crisis. The Republic of Congo was once one of Africa"s largest petroleum producers, but with declining production it will need to hope for new offshore oil finds to sustain its oil earnings over the long-term.

Travel 2000 Ghana

Ghana was the first British colony in Africa to gain independence - on March 6th -1957. It was formerly known as the Gold Coast.

If you spend a few hours in the uncongested capital at Accra, and you"ll swear waves and wind off the Gulf of Guinea have instilled the region and people alike with equatorial warmness.

If an award is given for the country with the most amicable people in West Africa, Ghana would be a severe candidate.

Travel Africa

Few is known about the Camerun before 1472, when the Portuguese arrived shouting "camarões, camarões!", surprised by the great quantity of giant shrimps - from where the name of the country. In the following 400 years the history of the Camerun of the south as that of all the coastal zones of western Africa, rotated around draws her/it some slaves. The Camerun of the north, was contrarily the theater of battles among different kingdoms, above all the Kanem-Bornu of the Ciad.

When the Prussian ones arrived at the end of the XIX century, the Camerun "feudal" was under the control of the Fulanis, whose court was found to Sokoto (Nigeria). Since Great Britain delayed for decades to the proposal of a head douala to found a protectorate in the years" 50 of the XIX century, at the end the Prussian ones took over that in 1884 they initialed an accord with 5 days of advance on the English. The Prussian ones were active colonizers, they built schools, railroads, plantations, but their regime it was rigid: in a plantation the 20% of the workers died only in a year because of the heavy too job. After the first world war the Camerun received new administrators sent by the Society of the Nations, that allow to French an order for the control of the 80% of the territory, while to the English the jurisdiction stayed on two separate areas: one in the plateaus of the southwest (Camerun of the south), the other in the north (Camerun of the north, now belonging to Nigeria). An only nation was divided therefore in three parts governed by two been colonial separate - a situation that subsequently got further the perspective of the unification. Besides, the English neglected their territories mostly dealing with their administrative capital in Nigeria. In to turn of few years the English sells their possessiones to the Germans, that nevertheless they didn"t much longer preserve them - with the burst of the second world war you/they had repatriated and dispossessed of their earths from the Allies.
